Commercial Oil Spill Detergents More Harmful Than Oil.

Today, The Journal of Environmental Science and Technology is publishing a report showing that commercial dispersants used in oil spills, which break down crude oil, are more harmful to living coral than the oil itself.
While oil has the ability to smother coral (essentially "suffocating" it from nutrients), the dispersants used to break up oil slicks actually poisons coral, effectively killing it from the inside out. In oil clean up, the question has to be, what is the least further impact on the environment? While breaking up slicks may save some wildlife, using these chemicals appears to damage one of the most important and un-renewable resources in the sea. I guess the answer is to not use dispersants anywhere near large coral reefs or deposits.

Blame where blame is due...

It's clear to most people not only in the US, but also around the world that what happened at Virginia Tech this week was a tragedy. The largest mass murder in history took place this week, and I think there are very few people that the severity of this is lost on.
One group of people who seem to loose sight of what's really going on is the media. Yesterday the world was presented with the incompetent ramblings of a seriously low-functioning individual. A man whose message does not warrant thought or attention was given credence and legitimacy by the media.
As I think about it, it seems to me that playing back the videos, showing the photos and printing the psychotic, misguided and incoherent philosophies is only serving to add fuel to the fire-to encourage others filled with disorganized thoughts and rage to follow in the killer's footsteps. This man made mention of "Dylan and Eric"- referring to the Columbine killers, whom he saw 7 years ago in the media storm that surrounded that tradgedy.
So shame on NBC for putting this information out there for ratings. Secondly, it's important to mention that many media outlets and commentators are calling for the firings of Charles Steger (VT President) and Wendell Flinchum (VT Chief of Police). These people aren't responsible for what happened, nor are they directly responsible for the lack of warning on campus. Even if emails had gone out directly, students would have gone to class, and profs would have taught, albeit whilst looking over their shoulders. No one is to blame but the guy who pulled the trigger...if anyone else is to blame, it's his family for not following through with mental health treatment recommended by the court. People are mandated to get Mental Health treatment by the courts and don't follow through and end up committing psychotic crimes all the time-i see it every day, it's just that most people only kill one person, so you don't hear about it.
There is an online petition to stop the media from showing the footage and pictures from this psychotic man, as well as to stop them from calling for Mr. Steger and Mr. Flinchum to be fired. This web petition was set up by VT students and Alumni who know their president and chief aren't to blame. I've signed it, so should you.

The State of Art in Iran.

In Iran there is a crew illustrating their political viewpoint by creating the illusion of blood splattered on governmental monuments. If only there were artists in the US who would stand to make such a bold symbolic political statement against our own forms of bloodshed.
Thanks to the Iran Graffiti Report.

Today's Death Toll: 3 US troops killed in Southern Baghdad. For more information go to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.

Weeping Madonna

This is what I like to see. Creative Graffiti. Apparently these artists cut through the back of the billboard and poured paint outward. Creative, enjoyable, entertaining.

"good story, rich and compelling."

i love it.

What the F is with Boston?!

So, I'm sure that most people have heard about the "bomb scare" in Boston yesterday. As they NOW know, these were advertisements for Aqua Teen hunger Force, yet they are still chaging the 2 advertising guys with a few charges including some trumped up charge about a "hoax device" and disorderly conduct. The fact of the matter is that this wasn't a "hoax device" at all. it wasn't made to look like a bomb, act like a bomb, or scare people like a bomb. AS you can see in the picute to the left, It was wired and had a battery because it was a LIGHT BOARD and needs electricity to run...it literally looks like a Lite Bright from the early 90's....These 2 guys are an advertising agency hired by Turner Broadcasting and Cartoon Network to promote the new season of the show. This is an alternative advertising situation, and the stupid mayor of Boston 0verreacts thinking that someone is trying to invoke panic. He also made a very childish and unfouded remark saying "just think this is outrageous, what they've done ... It's all about corporate greed"
What a dumbass. it's not about corporate greed at all, it's about promoting a PRODUCT in an alternative way. how is that greedy? all companies, no matter what the product promote it. Obviously, the people behing Aqua Teen know that print ads in good housekeeping aren't going to reach their audience. PLUS, because of the City of Boston's overreaction, the show has recieved more publicity than it ever would have. so i say, bravo gentlemen.
But these charges!!! Littering? sure . Graffitti? Possibly. but you cant go around charging people on trumped up charges because you are a dumb ass and reacted BEFORE assessing the situation. Perhaps if the city of Boston had assessed and reacted to things that actually matter, perhaps that poor woman wouldn't have been killed in the big dig tunnel back in July.

Get your story together Boston. Do something right for once.

These devices? Found in 9 other cities...including NY. Boston was the only city that didn't assess the situation FIRST.

the story is here.

UCLAsshole.

So. At 11:00 PM every night UCLA police officers check the identification of people in the library for the safety of all students there. When asked for ID, one student refused, became defiant with the cops, refused to leave, and resisted arrest. At that point, the cops tasered him to persuade compliance. A crowd gathered and this asshole decided to play martyr and lay on the floor, continuing to resist arrest, and refusing to leave. In THIS VIDEO you can hear the kid yelling about the Patriot Act and that the police are abusing power, etc.
I'm all for making a statement, and I'm all for fighting the system, fighting government, protest. But being asked to vacate the library when you KNOW (this kid is 23) the rules regarding library time after 11:00, that isn't a political protest. This kid was simply resisting arrest and attempting to incite a riot. He had no acceptable political agenda, and when he attempted to come up with one, he ran his mouth about the Patriot Act, which has absolutely NOTHING to do with being tasered cause you're a fucking dick.
There are too many kids out there who purport to understand politics, who think they know what they want or believe. I'm not only talking about UCLA, I'm also talking about Cedarville, or any other place where conservative kids continue to pledge allegiance to George Bush, when he has committed horrendous problems for the American People and our Foreign Policy.

Let's all think about THAT rather than trying to incite a Riot cause you don't want to carry your Fucking Student ID, or blindly following a politic that you believe without looking at the facts. Facts. Information. Truth. THAT'S what we need to worry about. right or left.
